Marshall Goldsmith Shows How To Become Present through Empathy

Social media platforms create a lack of empathy in making people feel divided from someone with another point of view. Marshall Goldsmith explores employing empathy in each moment of the day.

Becoming Present through Empathy
“Singular empathy is unique to the moment. It changes with each situation. When you demonstrate singular empathy, you cannot be inauthentic.”

In a blog post related to empathy and the virtual world, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, the renowned leadership expert and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith talks about employing empathy in each moment of the day.

Goldsmith writes: “Singular empathy is unique to the moment. It changes with each situation. Sometimes it resembles the empathy of understanding, other times the empathy of feeling, caring, or doing. The only constant with singular empathy is how it concentrates our attention on a single moment and therefore makes it singular for all involved. When you demonstrate singular empathy, you cannot be inauthentic. You are not disrespecting other people from other previous moments in your life, immediate or long ago. You are demonstrating empathy to the only people who can appreciate it: the people who are with you now.”

As more people rely on social media for news, they are becoming increasingly divided from their neighbors, as these platforms foment a lack of empathy in creating an “other” for someone with a different point of view. And there has been a widespread dissemination of misinformation and disinformation. This has led to a true lack of empathy among the population.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
