“Support is the external help you need to succeed. The thing is, we all need help.”

In a blog post related to support, adapted from his new book The Earned Life, renowned leadership coach and bestselling author Marshall Goldsmith explores how support is an essential component of success.

Goldsmith writes: “Support is the external help you need to succeed. It comes to your rescue, like the cavalry, via three sources: First, an organization in the form of money, equipment, even office space, anything you consider a valuable resource. Support like this is not easily acquired in organizations with limited resources. You have to earn your share of the pie. Second, in the form of an individual through direction, or coaching, or instruction, or empowerment, or confidence building. third, from a defined group. The thing is, we all need help.”

Western nations are increasingly coming to the support of Ukraine in the face of continuing Russian aggression and atrocities. The U.S. Congress recently passed a $40 billion military and humanitarian aid package for Ukraine weeks after lawmakers approved $13.6 billion in emergency aid for the war effort. That total — roughly $53 billion over two months — goes beyond what President Biden requested and is poised to amount to the largest foreign aid package to move through Congress in at least two decades. The package would provide $6 billion for weaponry, intelligence support, training and other defense assistance to Ukrainian forces, as well as $8.7 billion to replenish American equipment sent to the country. It would allocate $3.9 billion for European Command operations, including intelligence support and hardship pay for troops in the region.

Such large-scale support is necessary for combatting unfounded aggression. But on a personal level, people need support to reach even modest goals.

In The Earned Life Goldsmith uncovers the source of today’s existential crises, including regrets that stem from choices that irrevocably alter our lives, reroute destinies, and haunt our memories. These are particularly timely themes today.

With Goldsmith’s book as a guide, readers can close the gap between what they plan to achieve and what they actually get done—even in a world full of inescapable unfairness and curveballs—and live an earned life that is fulfilling in the long run.
